Cleanup Day Best Practices

Clean-Up Day Best Practices

  • Align yourself with others who have the same passion you do.  Ex. Teachers, students, groups/clubs, etc…
  • Plan ahead.  Try to schedule either after school or a Saturday morning.  Have a weather contingency plan.
  • When selecting areas to be cleaned, keep in mind how many bags and volunteers you will need, what other gear will you need (gloves, grabbers, buckets, wagons, bug spray, sunscreen, etc.)
  • Contact local law enforcement and let them know you will be cleaning up.  They may even want to be present if you are in a well populated area.  Contact local elected officials, as well… they may want to join in (especially in an election year!)
  • Work with your local landfill or waste disposal company to create a plan to dispose of the trash.  Your county commissioner or local solid waste officer may be able to help with this, too.
  • Use social media to both promote the cleanup beforehand and to recognize participants afterward.  Take lots of pictures!!
  • Stay positive even if you drive by the following day and more trash has been thrown out…  You are making a very big difference in the big picture!
  • Be sure to weigh and keep track of your bags and fill out your reporting form to send back in to PALS
  • THANK YOU!!!!
